Hi There

Field designs and builds innovative solutions for improving child survival, healthcare and conservation in several African countries. We’re looking for creative, curious and tenacious people to work with us creating design-driven solutions to shape health systems and fix markets failing people around the world. Our distributed team works from Berlin, London and Boston, with extended time in Abuja, Nigeria, basing design research and development from the ground, where the learnings are richest.

We believe that only diverse teams can build strong solutions to the often wicked problems that health systems face. We believe people matter the most - those that we work with and that we work for. We believe in the power of careful design, incorrigible curiosity, and respect for the challenges and contexts we engage to produce solutions that generate real, lasting value for the people and programs we serve.

If this sounds a lot like you, we humbly suggest we could do some great things together. Please get in touch with a portfolio at [email protected]

Design Lead

The rules for interface design focused on the next billion internet and mobile users are still being written. Established internet audiences are enjoying the fruits of the professionalisation of interaction and interface design, yet in emerging markets, the users of which carry vastly different and diverse cultural backgrounds, assumptions, priorities, and levels of technological literacy, design is too often still a cosmetic afterthought.

We believe an opportunity exists to contribute to the development of an evidence-based methodology for producing engaging, effective design for the world’s emerging markets, and as an organisation, seek to establish proven excellence in a field on the cusp of an historic explosion in demand, but currently nonetheless currently largely ignored.

We’re looking for a design lead to help us shape and achieve this vision, starting with visual and interaction design for a family of web and mobile products for healthcare, health logistics and conservation. Our design lead will work closely with our developers, users and subject matter experts to investigate and synthesize requirements and opportunities, researching, designing and building comprehensive, beautiful solutions and the processes that help us reach them.

Day to day, our design lead will translate high-level requirements into structured interactions and intuitive, functional workflows, as well as design interfaces and methodologies for navigating complex information. They will assist with mockup and asset production, and basic front-end development where necessary, but prioritise development and stewardship of our design philosophy and processes, and their realisation in the products we serve. Ultimately, our design lead will help us push the boundaries of design as a practice, and refine it as a tool for social and economic empowerment.

This is a full-time position, with frequent (but negotiable) travel requirements.

Required

  • Proven experience with and passion for design research, cross-cultural design, information and interaction design
  • 6+ years working experience in a fast-paced environment (agency, software development company, freelance portfolios also considered)
  • MS/BA/BS in design-related discipline, or comparable work experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in interaction, visual, and experience design. Demonstrated knowledge of design best practices and their implementation in web and mobile (portfolio required)
  • Comfortable spinning up wireframes, clickable mockups and a modern front-end dev environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work and interact cross-functionally with experts on technical subject matter, developers, business development, public and private sector clients
  • Demonstrated ability to decompose and complex systems and data to produce effective interfaces and visualisations
  • Excellent analytical and creative problem solving skills
  • Willing to travel (Europe and Africa)
  • Language skills: English (fluent)

Preferable

  • Professional experience working on data-driven decision-support systems
  • Professional experience designing for novice or semi-literate users
  • Professional experience working remotely and with distributed teams
  • Professional experience working in West Africa, especially Nigeria
  • Front-end (javascript, css, html5) software development skills.
  • Location: Abuja or Berlin preferred, but remote work will be considered.

Data Engineer / Analyst

We’re looking for a motivated data engineer / analyst to support our innovative health system support and transformation projects. You’ll help collect, investigate, model and analyse data from a variety of national health logistics systems Field develops, to produce insights which will shape our products, guide public health programs, and help transform the public health field at large.

Your job will involve exploring data from operational systems for managerial and product development insights, responding to customer requests for specific operational analytics, and investigating data quality issues alongside our program team to help identify and diagnose potential system problems and opportunities. You will be asked to develop models to support internal and external management and product development decisions, develop data management and cleaning pipelines, and collaborate with our software development team in the development of analysis tools. You will be working closely with our software, design and health program teams to provide integrated work which can create real impact at a national and international scale.

This is initially a 6-month full time contract position.

Front-end Developer

We’re looking for a front-end developer to join our team at Field Intelligence. You’ll be working with a cross-functional product team to build offline-friendly, highly performant mobile and desktop apps that aim to improve healthcare in Nigeria and beyond.

We’re considering most levels of experience, from junior to mid-weight to senior. One of our main criteria for this position is expertise in CSS – we have some amazing senior developers in our team, but we need someone to work with them to focus on the really user-facing parts of the tech stack. We’re talking about all the things that affect user experience – faithfully executing designs in HTML and CSS, interactions, performance, usability. We are prioritising scalability and modularity in our apps, and that needs to include the front-end and UI components. We <3 people with strong opinions – your voice will be heard in this team.

We’re also quite open to what this role actually looks like – a hybrid designer/front-end developer is as much an option as a senior javascript engineer with an interest in CSS.

Some examples of the systems we’re working on:

  • A responsive mobile app (PWA), built for offline performance, with supportive workflows to guide users through public health logistics work
  • A dashboard interface with data visualisations/analytical tools to analyse and forecast vaccine usage throughout the country
  • A payment system to help local pharmacies stay stocked with essential medicines
  • A mobile app to guide informal transport workers (a.k.a. drivers) in delivering vaccines and other health commodities

Finally, we work mainly with React and couchdb / serverless Node backend, so we’re looking for someone who can work within a javascript-centric environment to do templating and styling, test performance, collaborate in via git, and help refine our front-end practices.

Required

  • Experience working collaboratively with teams to ship products, but also someone who is self-organised and can work independently when needed
  • CSS and CSS pre-processors (SCSS / sass) and at least some javascript knowledge.
  • Comfort in a modern js dev environment/workflow – git, code reviews, npm, jest, webpack/rollup
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills – we are a distributed team and pay close attention to our documentation and team communication.
  • Location: Abuja or Berlin
  • Fluency in English

Preferable

  • Experience with data visualisation
  • Experience in designing for offline-first apps or environments with unstable internet connections.
  • Experience in remote work with distributed teams
  • French language

If you’re also a designer, please include a folio/some case studies in your application. We’d really like to dive into the details of your work, so we’d rather have a few detailed case studies than some shiny-looking screenshots with no context. Tell us about the goals, the context, constraints, the team, your role, the process, and the outcomes.

Field places a premium on transparency and team culture, and focuses on personal development of team members, as well as company-wide creativity in finding solutions to problems. As this is necessarily a fluid position, feel free to get in touch for any clarification you might need.

  • Manage international and domestic logistics / travel arrangements for the team, including navigating immigration requirements

  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage own time and push back on unreasonable requests
  • Familiarity with office management procedures and basic accounting principles
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office and office management software (google docs etc.)
  • Experience working with federal government and/or international public health partners (UNICEF, WHO, BMGF etc) an advantage
  • Qualifications in secretarial studies will be an advantage
  • Deep experience with logistics, legal and accounting fields also an advantage
  • High school diploma; BSc/BA in office administration or relevant field is preferred
